Sooners lose another QB, this time to baseball
Oklahoma’s depth chart is starting to look a bit thinner at the quarterback position. Trevor Knight recently left Norman to join the Texas A&M Aggies, and now another quarterback is leaving the Sooners, though this one will remain on campus.
Cody Thomas has decided to leave the football program to focus solely on baseball.
“I’m always for my players doing what they feel is best for them,” coach Bob Stoops told the Tulsa World about Thomas’ decision. “Cody has a dream to play baseball and he feels this is good for him. We support him and hope for the best for him.”
Stoops also said the door will remain open for Thomas should he change his mind.
Thomas was a member of Oklahoma’s 2013 recruiting class, but he was also drafted in the 30th round of the MLB Draft that year. He chose to attend Oklahoma and play both sports instead of trying his hand at the pros. Thomas appeared in 12 games for the Sooners, starting three last season when Knight went down with an injury.
The departures of Thomas and Knight leave the Sooners with Mayfield still holding down the starter spot, but behind him there are a lot of question marks. At the moment, it appears Mayfield’s backup would be Austin Kendall, a four-star recruit from North Carolina who just graduated from high school in December. As in last month.
Behind him are two walk-ons, and then there’s transfer quarterback Kyler Murray, who comes from Texas A&M (it only seems fitting that in a post about baseball, we bring up a sort of quarterback trade between A&M and Oklahoma), but will have to sit out a season before being eligible to play.
