Oklahoma QB Cody Thomas quits team to focus on baseball
Oklahoma backup quarterback Cody Thomas has left the football team to focus on baseball.
“I’m always for my players doing what they feel is best for them,” coach Bob Stoops said. “Cody has a dream to play baseball and he feels this is good for him. We support him and hope for the best for him.”
Thomas, a rising redshirt junior, played in three football games this past season and completed just one pass. In 2014, Thomas played in seven games with three starts. He completed 30 of 66 passes for 342 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed 23 times for 141 yards and a score.
“Cody approached me about trying out for our team and winning a roster spot and I obliged,” Oklahoma baseball coach Pete Hughes said. “Anytime we can have a quality kid and great competitor like that around our program is a bonus.”
Thomas played one season of baseball in 2014 as an outfielder. He played in 14 games, started one, and had one hit in 12 at-bats. The New York Yankees picked Thomas in the 30th round of the 2013 Major League Baseball draft.
Coach Bob Stoops said he was open to Thomas rejoining the football program in the fall. The team has now lost its two backups to starter Baker Mayfield.
