Landon Cassill to drive No. 38 for Front Row in 2016
Landon Cassill has a ride for 2016.
Front Row Motorsports announced Wednesday that Cassill would team with Chris Buescher in 2016. Cassill will drive the No. 38 car that was driven by David Gilliland in 2015.
“I feel like Front Row Motorsports is a great fit for me,” Cassill said in a team statement. “I’ve got several years of experience in the series now, and being a part of this team will help me take the next step in my career. I’m grateful to Bob Jenkins and Ford Motor Company for the opportunity and can’t wait to get in the car.”
Cassill drove the No. 40 car in 2015 for Hillman Racing. The former Hendrick Motorsports development driver has competed in 32 or more races in each Sprint Cup Series season since 2011 while driving for underfunded teams including Phoenix Racing and BK Racing. He’s still just 26 years old; it’s a bit surprising that he hasn’t been considered for other rides over the past few years. There’s something to be said for keeping a low-level ride and staying out of trouble in the Cup Series.
Cassill has also been competing full-time in the Xfinity Series for JD Motorsports. He was 12th in the points standings in 2014 and 18th in 2015. His only top 10 in the Cup Series came in 2014 when he finished fourth in the fall Talladega race.
Buescher, the 2015 Xfinity Series champion, will be in the No. 34 for Front Row. The team announced a technical alliance with Roush Fenway Racing earlier this offseason and Buescher is still officially a Roush Fenway driver. However, with Greg Biffle, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Trevor Bayne returning to the team in 2016, there was not an open ride at RFR.
Gilliland’s plans for 2016 have not been announced.
