Ottawa Senators to host CWHL Clarkson Cup next two years
TORONTO, Ont. — Sources close to the CWHL report the Clarkson Cup, the league’s equivalent to the Stanely Cup, will be hosted by the Ottawa Senators and played at the Canadian Tire Centre for the next two years.
The CWHL was approached by the Ottawa Senators in order to find a way to support women’s hockey. Ottawa does not currently have a CWHL team and this was determined to be the best way for the NHL franchise to lend their support.
The top two seeds of the league will host a best of three playoff series against the lower seeded team in their home arena the last week of February. The two teams that emerge victorious will have a week off to heal up before heading to Ottawa, March 11-13, for a winner take all game.
The days prior to the Clarkson Cup Final will be for the Awards Gala and a community service day for the players to interact with youth hockey players in the area.
This is a significant step for the women’s hockey league in Canada. Currently the Montreal Canadians, Calgary Flames and Toronto Maple Leafs all partner with the CWHL team in their area and are considered a significant source of funding for the league.
