Jordan Spieth hits fan in the backside with errant drive
Jordan Spieth got the backing of a fan on Friday in Abu Dhabi in a way he didn’t expect.
In the now-suspended second round of the European Tour’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, Spieth pulled his drive on the ninth hole, and it was heading for one of Abu Dhabi Golf Club’s water hazards — that is, until a fan got in the way.
Spieth’s ball hit the unsuspecting fan in the backside, and the contact kept on the ball on land.
From there, Spieth managed to make par. He turned in 2-over 38, just a day after lamenting that his driving had let him down in Round 1.
After a lengthy fog delay held up the start of Round 2, play was called after Spieth and his playing competitors, Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler, finished 13 holes. Spieth was 1 over on the round when play was called, sitting seven shots behind leader Andy Sullivan.
A total of 60 players in the field still have to finish their second rounds on Saturday morning, at which point a cut will be made.
