Hockey picks up shutout victory – La Crosse Tribune
The St. Paul Highland Park hockey team doesn’t know what it’s like to score a goal on the La Crescent hockey team, and it’s had two shots at it this year.
The Lancers picked up another shutout over the Scots on Jan. 16 when they made the trip north to St. Paul. The first meeting produced a 7-0 win, and although it wasn’t as high-scoring the second time around, La Crescent secured a solid 3-0 victory.
The Lancers used a balanced, but not overwhelming, attack in each period to leave the city with the win. Laudon Poellinger opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at 6:22 of the first period to give the Lancers the lead heading into the first intermission.
Carter Schmitz made it 2-0 at 4:11 of the second period with a power-play goal, assisted by Zack Hanno. Then Hanno scored a goal of his own, his 200th career point, at 1:50 of the third period, a short-handed tally assisted by Schmitz. Hanno, a senior, now sits second all-time in points at LCHS.
Josh DeBoer made 30 saves in goal for the Lancers, who had 43 shots on goal that night.
“We went up there and played a good game,” head coach J.P. Piche said. “We got one in each period and did what we needed to do to win.”
The Lancers have a trio of games this week, which started Tuesday with a trip to Viroqua. Tonight (Thursday), they host Sparta/Mauston at 7 p.m. and Friday, West Salem/Bangor comes to town for a 7:30 p.m. game which was originally scheduled for Jan. 12.
