Spurs to hold out Parker (hip) against Phoenix
SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs announced it plans to hold out guard Tony Parker from the team’s Thursday matchup at Phoenix due to soreness in his right hip.
Parker left San Antonio’s 112-83 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday due to hip soreness with 3:48 left in the third quarter, and didn’t return to action. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich hasn’t divulged the severity of Parker’s injury.
“I haven’t talked to him,” Popovich said after Sunday’s game.
The Spurs held Parker out of two games recently due to soreness in the hip, but it’s believed the club is sitting the guard as a precautionary measure as Popovich has said on numerous occasions he errs on the side of caution in dealing with veteran players. Parker wasn’t available Monday to the media when the Spurs worked out in preparation for their upcoming road trip.
Parker led San Antonio in its 99-95 win Thursday over the Cleveland Cavaliers, scoring a game-high 24 points on 11-of-18 shooting. Parker averaged 27.5 points in addition to shooting .649 from the field in the two games prior to his last outing Sunday against the Mavericks.
