Hockey player arrested for arson after burning love letters
We’ve all been there, haven’t we? In love. Heartbroken. The only cure for that anguish being some grandiose symbolic gesture.
Justin Agosta, a 25-year-old defenseman for the Florida Everbaldes of the ECHL, was upset with his girlfriend late last month. So upset that he took a stack of love letters, went outside, purchased some gasoline at a local gas station, doused the letters and set them ablaze.
No word if he was blasting The Cure or Joy Division from a nearby boom box.
To the surprise of no one that’s seen a match hit gasoline, the fire got out of control. Agosta was arrested on Dec. 30, 2015, and charged with second-degree arson.
The 25-year-old told firefighters who responded to his apartment along the 11200 block of Everblades Parkway in Estero that he was upset with his girlfriend when he bought gasoline at a nearby gas station to douse the letters. Agosta said he tried to put the fire out with water and a towel when it got out of control near the entrance of his apartment and caused damage to the front of his building and walls where soot collected. The fire sprinkler went off and Agosta dialed 911 to alert firefighters.
Since this is hockey, Agosta hasn’t missed a game after the arrest. He was briefly recalled to the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL last month — the Carolina Hurricanes’ affilitate — and has played eight games with them this season, but they don’t have a player page for him anymore. He most recently played on Saturday on Saturday for the Everblades.
His next court appearance is Feb. 1.
Guess you can be a “Florida Man” even if you just play in Florida.
