Seattle survived against Minnesota when a chip-shot 27-yard FG went awry in a 10-9 win last Sunday. The offense was scoreless through 3 quarters but showed a little life in the final stanza. QB Russell Wilson finished 13-26 for 142 yards, a TD and an interception. He ran for 21 yards on 5 carries and was sacked twice. He had a hard time dealing with the bitter cold. The defense held the Vikings to 146 passing yards and 58 rushing yards. They also had 3 sacks and a fumble recovery.
Carolina was 14-0 before finally tasting defeat in a Week 16 loss to Atlanta. QB Cam Newton (the favorite to take NFL MVP Award) threw for 3,837 yards and 35 TDs to only 10 picks. He also ran for 636 yards and 10 scores. RB Jonathan Stewart (989 yards rushing) has missed the last 3 games but is expected to play this week. TE Greg Olsen was the top target this season as he hauled in 77 passes for 1,104 yards and 7 TDs. The defense picked off 24 passes and yielded only 88.4 ypg on the ground.

Sure the Seattle Seahawks’ defense has played well in the last half of the season and in the Wild Card round holding six of their nine opponents to 13 or fewer points, but they didn’t play much in those games. When they played top flight offenses their D got exploited with the Cardinals hanging 39 on the board and the Steelers 30. They did hold Arizona to 6 in Week 17, but the Cardinals mailed that in and sat Carson Palmer in the second half. The Panthers allowed 20 or more points in three of their last five and their pass defense has been mediocre at best over that stretch allowing a below average 258 yards per game. They’ve now lost starting CB Charles Tillman so don’t expect that to improve this week. The last time these two met they combined for 50 points and there is no reason to think that will change today.
