Tony Stewart says he’s heading back to dirt racing after retiring
Tony Stewart has an idea of what his post-Sprint Cup retirement plans are going to be.
The three-time champion is retiring following the 2016 season and is at the Chili Bowl Nationals this week. The Chili Bowl is an indoor dirt track race in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
“I plan on running a lot of dirt races after the end of the season when I retire from the Cup stuff, so I would say this is on the radar,” Stewart said at a Chili Bowl press conference.
Stewart has an affinity for the Chilii Bowl and is in attendance this weekend to help with things like track prep even though he’s not driving. Stewart has won the Chili Bowl twice and the finals of this year’s race are Saturday night broadcast on MavTV.
He hasn’t raced in a sprint car since he was involved in an accident with Kevin Ward Jr. on Aug. 9, 2014. Ward walked out on the track after he made contact with the wall while racing with Stewart. Stewart’s car hit Ward and Ward died from the impact.
Stewart was not charged criminally in Ward’s death, though the Ward family has filed a civil lawsuit regarding the incident.
Clint Bowyer will replace Stewart in the No. 14 car in 2017. Bowyer is driving for HScott Motorsports for 2016 while he waits to take over Stewart’s car.
