Canucks end Panthers’ win streak; teams nearly brawl postgame (Video)
All good things must come to an end, and for the Florida Panthers their 12-game winning streak ended at the hands of the Vancouver Canucks Monday night.
The game started as well as the Panthers could have planned with Jussi Jokinen netting his eighth of the season 80 seconds into the game. Florida doubled their lead with 33 seconds to go in the opening frame when Jonathan Huberdeau beat Jacob Markstrom to go up 2-0.
Daniel Sedin’s first of the night early in the second cut the Panthers lead in half and also moved him one goal away from tying Markus Naslund for the franchise record.
With under three minutes to go in the third period, Jake Virtanen, back from a rough World Junior Championship for Canada, forced overtime with a beauty:
Two minutes into overtime the newly-acquired Emerson Etem drew a hooking penalty on Jaromir Jagr, setting up a 4-on-3 power play for the Canucks. That’s when Daniel Sedin potted his second goal of the game to tie Naslund:
Following Sedin’s winner, there was a near-bench clearing brawl that saw plenty of pushing and shoving and even Florida head coach Gerard Gallant yapping at Canucks assistant Glen Gulutzan.
The real mystery out of all this isn’t what started the melee, it’s what the heck Panthers announcer and Hockey Hall of Famer Denis Potvin meant when he uttered the following (video here):
“The Sedins are pointing fingers now … Normally they only use those fingers to lick the peanut butter off of their bread.”
(The normal go-to move is the finger in the peanut butter jar. It seems like a very unnecessary extra step to put the peanut butter on your bread and then use your finger to scrape it off.)
Potvin also decided whatever Daniel Sedin did following the goal was worthy enough of calling him a “lowlife,” via Steph a.k.a. @MyRegularFace:
This should be a fun one for the league’s Hockey Operations department to sort through with Colin Campbell making the final call.
