Texas State announces Everett Withers as new coach
Texas State went to the FCS ranks for its new coach.
The school announced Wednesday that it had hired James Madison coach Everett Withers.
Withers replaces Dennis Franchione, who retired after the 2015 season.
Withers has been the head coach at James Madison for the past two seasons The Dukes have gone 19-7 over the last two seasons and have qualified for the FCS playoffs in each. Before he was the head coach at James Madison, Withers served as Ohio State’s defensive coordinator in 2013.
Withers was also the interim coach at North Carolina during the 2011 season. Withers, the defensive coordinator under Butch Davis for the previous three seasons, took over as head coach after Davis was fired before the 2011 season in July because of the academic scandal at the university. Withers’ Tar Heels went 7-6 and lost the Independence Bowl.
A native of Charlotte, Withers played defensive back at Appalachian State from 1981-1985. He’s also been an assistant coach in the NFL for both the New Orleans Saints and the Tennessee Titans.
Texas State has been at the FBS level since 2012. In four years of FBS existence, the team has a record of 20-28. In 2015, the Bobcats were 3-9, the worst record the team has had in those four seasons.
