Tennessee DC John Jancek won’t return for 2016
Tennessee is looking for a new defensive coordinator.
The school announced Wednesday that it had agreed to mutually part ways with defensive coordinator John Jancek.
“John and I had a long discussion this morning and we both came to the conclusion that it was best to part ways,” Tennessee coach Butch Jones said in a statement. “I want to thank Coach Jancek for his contributions to the University of Tennessee football program the past three years. His hard work and dedication to this program played a major role in our back-to-back bowl wins. These decisions are never easy especially for someone I have worked with at three different schools. We feel strongly about the direction our program is headed and will work diligently to find the best person available to lead our defense.”
The Tennessee defense was ranked No. 36 in total defense in 2015. The Vols gave up 362 yards per game and 5.21 yards per play. Tennessee’s rush defense gave up 151.6 yards per game, good for 45th in the country.
The team’s worst defensive performances in terms of yards per play came in back-to-back weeks vs. Arkansas and Georgia. The Vols lost to the Razorbacks and beat the Bulldogs.
Jancek has been with Tennessee for three seasons. Before he arrived in 2013 he was the defensive coordinator at Cincinnati for three seasons. Jancek came to Tennessee with Jones from the Bearcats.
