Florida State K Roberto Aguayo declares for draft
The most accurate kicker in NCAA history is headed to the NFL.
Florida State redshirt junior Roberto Aguayo announced Wednesday that he will forgo his final season of eligibility to head to the pros.
“After giving this decision careful thought and meeting with my family and Coach Fisher, I have decided to enter the NFL Draft,” Aguayo said in a statement. “These last four years have been nothing short of incredible on and off the field. I have made memories that I will always treasure. One goal when I got here was to graduate, and I’m thankful I was able to earn my degree in Criminology this fall.
“Ever since I was a kid, I have bled Garnet and Gold. When I received a scholarship to play football at FSU from Coach Fisher it was a dream come true and a blessing.”
Aguayo finished his career 69-of-78 on field goal attempts and 198-of-198 on extra points, giving him a career total of 405 points and a conversion rate of .9673 (267-of-276), the best in NCAA history. He also never missed a kick inside 40 yards in his FSU career (hello, 33-yard extra point).
“I’m very happy for Roberto and his family,” Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher said. “He was phenomenal for us here at Florida State. He’s arguably one of the best kickers not only in Florida State history, but in NCAA history. I wish him nothing but the best. He was a great player, but also a great leader for our team and a great ambassador for our university. We’re very excited for him and we will look forward to watching him compete in the NFL for years to come.”
Aguayo, who earned his bachelor’s degree in criminology, was a three-time All-American at FSU and won the Lou Groza Award for the nation’s top kicker in 2013. If he makes an NFL roster in 2016, Aguayo would be the fourth active NFL kicker, joining Dustin Hopkins, Graham Gano and Sebastian Janikowski.
A specialist leaving school early for the draft is not unprecedented. Clemson punter Bradley Pinion left early last year and was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the fifth round.
