Official: UTSA coach Larry Coker resigns
We’ve got another FBS team that will be making a coaching change. UTSA announced Tuesday afternoon that head coach Larry Coker had resigned after reports emerged Tuesday morning that Coker and the team were parting ways.
“UTSA has been a very special place to me and I will be forever grateful for the experience,” Coker said in a team statement. “The future of UTSA football is very bright and I look forward to watching the Roadrunners’ success in the future.”
Coker, 67, has been the team’s coach since its inception in 2011. UTSA formed the football program five seasons ago and has a 26-31 record in those five seasons. UTSA was 3-9 in 2015.
Coker’s staff has been undergoing some significant turnover in recent days. Defensive coordinator Neal Neathery took the same position at Eastern Michigan and associate athletic director Shane Elder also took a job at EMU, according to Football Scoop. The staff needed to fill two other coaching positions as well.
Now there could be changeover on most, if not all of the staff with Coker’s departure.
Coker let UTSA to 8-4 and 7-5 records in 2012 and 2013, respectively. He was the head coach at Miami when the Hurricanes beat Nebraska for the BCS Championship following the 2001 season. That season was Coker’s first at Miami after he replaced Butch Davis.
He had a 60-15 record at Miami and was fired after the 2006 season when Miami finished the year 7-6. UTSA was his first (and possibly last) head coaching position after leaving the Hurricanes.
Texas State is currently looking for a new head coach after Dennis Franchione, another former Power Five coach, retired this offseason. Ball State is also looking after coach Pete Lembo accepted an assistant coaching position with Maryland.
