Furyk sitting out Tourney of Champions unsure of PGA Tour return date
Jim Furyk is among four PGA Tour winners who are skipping this week’s Hyundai Tournament of Champions at Kapalua on Hawaii.
However, it’s not because Furyk, who qualified for the winners-only event by taking the RBC Heritage last April, doesn’t want to play. Rather, Furyk is yet to fully recover from a bone contusion he suffered last September at the Deutsche Bank Championship. Furyk tried to play through the injury but withdrew from the subsequent BMW Championship after just six holes — his first WD in 20 years — and hasn’t played since, including skipping the Presidents Cup.
Furyk has tried hitting golf balls at home in Florida during the offseason, but he and his doctors do not feel he’s ready to return yet.
“Sometimes it can be tricky,” Furyk said to Golfweek. “I thought it would be healed by now, but the doctors did say it can take a while.”
It’s a game of wait-and-see for Furyk, who has few medical options to speed up his recovery. The bone heals when it heals. And Furyk isn’t going to show up again on Tour until he’s completely ready.
“It’s hard to compete on our Tour 70 or 80 or 90 percent,” Furyk said. “I’m not ready, and I’m not 100 percent.”
However, with the exception of Kapalua, Furyk had no intention of heading back on Tour until the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, which Furyk pans on making his season debut.
