Bulls' Rose to undergo MRI on sore right knee
TORONTO — Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose will undergo an MRI on Monday on a sore right knee. Rose missed his third consecutive game on Sunday because of lingering right hamstring soreness, but it was the revelation of knee soreness that came as a surprise prior to Sunday’s game against the Toronto Raptors.
Rose tore the ACL in his left knee in April 2012. He tore the medial meniscus in his right knee in November 2013 and had a meniscectomy on the same knee in February 2015. That being said, he didn’t sound too concerned about the latest knee setback this time around.
“I feel good,” Rose said. “I feel all right. I just overworked myself. I gotta figure out the days where I’m going to sit. I have to do a little bit better. But the games I have rolling, just tried to give myself a little bit more than I had. And it backfired on me. Tomorrow the MRI. I know everything’s going to be fine. But It’s more reassurance.”
Rose acknowledged there is ‘a little bit’ of pain in the knee.
“Just can’t push off the way I want to,” he said. “I was able to work out. Lift and shot a little bit. But just overworked myself.”
Rose said he thought he would be able to play on Sunday but woke up with some “discomfort,” so the Bulls medical staff decided to play it safe. He said the hamstring “feels good” and is hopeful he will be back on the floor Tuesday night when the Bulls take on the Milwaukee Bucks.
“I’m getting better every day,” Rose said. “It’s improving every day. I had a little bit of swelling. That’s gone. I just have to figure out my schedule a little bit better. I’d rather have this problem of overworking myself than actually being out there in a game and something happening during the game and something serious. If anything, I just have to cut back a little bit more.”
Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg said Rose had “a little residual pain on the front side,” but he said his point guard is keeping a positive mindset as the Bulls take a “cautious approach.”
“The thing with Derrick is he’s staying positive throughout this thing,” Hoiberg said. “I know he’s a little frustrated with it just because he was really playing. He had a 19-point game and then two games over 20. To have that type of stretch and then this setback, it’s been tough on him. At the same time, understand it’s a long season and there are a lot of games left and we have to be careful with it. And again, hopefully we’ll get good news [Monday].”
Rose doesn’t sound concerned about the prospect of missing games down the line; he just wants to limit his time in the gym.
“It ain’t them [minutes or games],” Rose said. “It’s me as far as I was coming out three straight times, three straight off days I came in and I shot instead of sitting out and getting recovery and massages and all that. I chose to shoot. And it kind of fatigued me. But the way I was playing, I didn’t want to miss any games or I didn’t want to go there and not be prepared. And it backfired a little bit as far as me having energy and fatigue in my legs.”
