Anonymous Bills player rips Mario Williams, who likely will be cut
All signs point to the Buffalo Bills cutting Mario Williams, with his bloated salary and underwhelming production.
And with one game left in his Bills career, it appears he won’t be sent out with a bouquet of roses. Check out what one unnamed Bills player told Buffalo News’ Ty Dunne about Williams:
“It’s been clear to me that Mario doesn’t care about anybody but himself,” the teammate said. “He followed that up by not giving any effort during the season and complaining about the scheme instead of manning up and saying he played like crap and doesn’t care.”
Asked if Williams had checked out the teammate doubled down:
“Totally checked out.”
So that’s nice. Somehow Doug Marrone doesn’t look so bad now …
Williams has been a missing man all season. In his first three seasons in Buffalo, he accumulated 38 sacks and five forced fumbles. But this season, Williams has 17 tackles and four sacks, and his 54-snap production — zero tackles, zero hits, zero anything — in the Bills’ 16-6 win over the Dallas Cowboys last week just hammered home what we’ve suspected for some time now: There is no chance he’s back.
The biggest reason, ultimately, is money. No shocker. Cutting Williams would save the team $12.9 million. But it also has been clear that Williams isn’t a good fit in Rex Ryan’s system (or that Ryan is unwilling to adapt and change his system), especially after seeing him asked to drop in coverage instead of rushing the passer.
Still, it’s on Williams — paid handsomely, mind you — to do what the coaches are asking him to do, no matter how crazy it sounds, to the best of his ability. That’s how winning teams operate. The Bills, sadly, will not have a winning season and only have had two since 1999.
