Funniest Plays of the Year: Adrian Beltre kicks ball foul (No. 4)
Editor’s note: This week, Big League Stew is counting down the five funniest plays of 2015. Come back to see who guffaws into the No. 1 spot. Here’s No. 4:
This is far from the first time Texas Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre has been involved in a strange play on a baseball field. Beltre has been known to go after other players if they touch his head, hit home runs after looking silly and constantly bicker with shortstop Elvis Andrus.
So it should come as no surprise that Beltre was involved in one of the funniest plays of 2015. During an August game against the Detroit Tigers, Beltre decided to have a little fun in the ninth inning. Jose Iglesias hit a bouncer down the third base line near Beltre.
The third baseman realized he had no play, and let the ball roll, hoping it would go foul. Once he realized that wasn’t going to happen, Beltre kicked the ball into foul territory hoping the umpires wouldn’t notice.
That, of course, wasn’t the case. Despite Beltre’s best efforts, Iglesias was awarded first base. It was a valiant effort, though, and a reminder that Beltre is still one of the most entertaining baseball players on the planet.
