Hockey fans litter ice with 8,000 undergarments for charity (Video)
The AHL’s Bakersfield Condors held their annual Teddy Bear Toss game last month and saw 7,908 stuffed animals hit the Rabobank Arena ice. On Sunday, the promotion was similar in nature, but the items flying through the air were just a bit different.
When Matthew Ford opened the scoring late in the second period during a 4-1 Condors win, the 4,233 fans in attendance tossed thousands of undergarments to the ice — socks, underwear, diapers, you name it.
According to the Condors, approximately 8,000 undergarments were collected with The Mission at Kern County and the Kern County Network for Children benefiting.
The event was originally known as “Undie Sundie” when it debuted in 2014, but due to the charities needing socks and diapers the most, it became “Sock Toss Sunday” this season.
In the three-year history of the event, which was born after team president Matthew Riley saw a bra hit the ice following a Taylor Hall hat trick in 2013, over 20,000 pieces have been collected by the Condors.
