Report: Eleven days after signing, Ryan Mallett to start for Ravens
Ryan Mallett will direct the offense against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
After years of starting no one at quarterback but Joe Flacco, the Baltimore Ravens will start their fourth quarterback of the season on Sunday, as NFL Network reports thatThe Ravens signed Mallett just 11 days ago, seven weeks after he was released by the Houston Texans for perpetual tardiness.
Flacco tore his ACL on Nov. 22 against the St. Louis Rams, and Matt Schaub took over. But Schaub suffered a shoulder injury, leaving the Ravens to turn to journeyman Jimmy Clausen.
But with two games remaining and out of the playoffs, the Ravens will give Mallett a chance. He was signed through 2016, and is getting a tryout, presumably to stick with the team as Flacco’s backup.

Mallett started four games and appeared in six for the Texans earlier in the season, completing 53.1 percent of his passes with three touchdowns and four interceptions. He was late at least twice during training camp, reportedly oversleeping and having to woken up at the team hotel when Houston was holding joint practices with Washington, then again just a couple of days after coach Bill O’Brien named Brian Hoyer the starter, an incident fans saw on “Hard Knocks”. He then missed the team charter to Miami in October, leading to his release.
Mallett told reporters shortly after arriving in Baltimore that being released may have been “the best thing for me” and that he’d sought help for unspecified personal issues.
