Catch of the Year countdown: Kevin Kiermaier got hops (No. 3)
Editor’s note: This week, Big League Stew is counting down our five favorite MLB catches of 2015. Come back each day to see who lands at No. 1.
Kevin Kiermaier established himself as one of the top centerfielders in the game in 2015. Perhaps even the best. He won a Gold Glove for his play with the Tampa Bay Rays, putting together enough highlights that everybody would be drooling over him if he played for a big-market team.
If you’re looking for Kiermaier’s iconic 2015 moment, it’s this one. In order to steal a homer from Manny Machado on Aug. 31, Kiermaier dashed to the right-center wall, flew through the air and slammed into the wall. Since it happened in Baltimore, it looked a lot like Mike Trout’s famous catch there in 2012.
According to Statcast, Kiermaier covered 62 feet and traveled at a top speed of 15.17 mph. He needed both a full extension and impeccable timing to get this, making it a lock for one of the top catches of the year.
PREVIOUSLY IN THIS SERIES:
• No. 5: Nolan Arenado tops the tarp
• No. 4: Mike Trout the homer thief
