Melo questionable vs. Cavs with sprained ankle
GREENBURGH, N.Y. — Knicks star forward Carmelo Anthony is questionable for Wednesday’s game against the Cavaliers due to a sprained right ankle.
He hopes to play against Cleveland and his friend LeBron James, but he may not know his status until shortly before tipoff.
“It’ll be tough. I don’t like missing those games, right there. I really don’t like missing those games,” Anthony said after practice Tuesday. “That competitive nature starts coming out and we’ve been playing some good basketball too, so that’s a game I probably wouldn’t want to sit out but I don’t want to risk it. But we do have three in four nights coming up, so it’s not about that one game.”
Knicks coach Derek Fisher is planning as if Anthony will play. If not, Lance Thomas, who scored 24 points on 9-for-9 shooting in Monday’s loss to Orlando, may start in his place.
Anthony sprained his ankle in the second half of Monday’s game while getting tangled up with teammate Robin Lopez. The Knicks will be cautious with Anthony but would certainly like to have him play. He is averaging 25 points on 59 percent shooting in his past two games.
Anthony has played in all but one game this season for the Knicks (14-15), who have won four of five and are off to a much better start than last season, when they won a franchise-low 17 games.
