Newburyport hockey picks up first win – The Daily News of Newburyport
The Newburyport boys hockey team was in danger of dropping its second straight game to start the season when the team fell behind by a goal on the road against Lynnfield in what was a lackluster first period for the visitors.
But the Clippers found their game in the second frame, and led by a pair of goals by Scott Webster, emerged with a 4-1 win over the Pioneers.
“We didn’t come out of the gates too well. It was a very sloppy, uninspired first period,” said Newburyport (1-1) head coach Paul Yameen. “But we came together in the second and third. We put together two periods and I’m happy about that. Lynnfield’s a pretty decent team; it was a good win on the road.”
Webster got the scoring started in the second period on a rush when he got the puck to the net through a screen on what was a heads-up play by the senior captain. Later in the period, the Clippers got what proved to be the game-winner from Matt Babcock, on assists by Paul Federico and Dylan Rogers.
Then, in the third period, Webster gave the visitors some breathing room with a 5-on-5 goal that was assisted by linemates Rob Lagasse and Tyson Gudaitis.
Webster now has three goals and two assists in the first two games of the season.
“He’s pretty much picked up where he left off from last year when he was our second-leading scorer,” Yameen said of Webster. “We expect that from him and he hasn’t let us down so far.”
The final goal of the game came from freshman Ben Tuffer on assists by Webster and Gudaitis.
Defenseman Connor Derby tallied his third assist of the young season on Webster’s first goal. Because of some injuries and some other needs, Newburyport has had to put some youngsters in the lineup, and so far they’ve performed pretty well.
“We have a couple freshmen playing for us. We’ve had to throw them right in the fire and they’ve come along nicely,” said Yameen. “But it’s going to take some time.”
One thing that will help the young guys, especially the defensemen, is the play of sophomore goalie Ken Hodge, who has been sharp in the Clippers’ two games this year. Saturday, Hodge stopped 21 of 22 shots and was the reason Newburyport was trailing by only a goal after the first period.
“I think Kenny played pretty well for us. He held down the fort for us in the first period. He made some big saves for us, so that was nice to see,” said Yameen.
The Clippers will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to face Westford Academy at 2. Newburyport’s first home game is Sunday at 4 against Acton-Boxboro.
