Miami Beach Bowl
USF vs Western Kentucky
Spread: Western Kentucky -2.5
Total: 66.5
Spread: Willie Taggart’s South Florida Bulls were one of the surprise teams of the 2015 college football season. After winning just six games in his first two years in Tampa Taggart’s bunch won eight this year. Marlon Mack will give Western Kentucky all sorts of problems running the football, but it’s the other side of the ball that will determine the winner. Brandon Doughty had a ridiculous season leading the Hilltoppers to the 6th ranked passing attack in the nation, but they’ll face a stout Bulls pass defense allowing just 221 yards per game through the air. USF has won four straight against the spread and have absolutely demolished their opponent in three straight. Take the points and expect an outright upset. Pick: USF +2.5
Total: Both teams have the ability to score. South Florida does it in the ground while Doughty leads an incredibly proficient Hilltopper passing attack. However, both defenses are often overlooked because of the high powered offenses. USF allows just 21 points per game with WKU surrendering only 25. South Florida will look to keep the clock rolling as often as possible which should keep Doughty off the field more than he’s used to. The total indicates a game being played in the high 20’s to 30’s, but neither defense has allowed 30+ since October. Wouldn’t be shocking if the winner gets to 30, but one defense at least one defense should succeed keeping this game well short of the number. Pick: Under 66.5
