Report: USC OL Chad Wheeler in altercation with police
USC left tackle Chad Wheeler was reportedly involved in a police altercation Saturday morning.
Per NBC News, Los Angeles police responded to a call of a man punching walls and windows at an apartment complex and possibly under the influence. Wheeler, identified as the man, then allegedly ran out of the apartment.
Wheeler was confronted by officers, got into an altercation with them, and was hit with bean bag rounds. The sources did not go into detail about the exact nature of what led police to use bean bag rounds, a less lethal form of force.
He was not arrested, but was transported to a local hospital and is being held under protective custody for psychiatric evaluation.
He and his girlfriend have a seven-month-old child and the child was put in protective custody. Wheelers girlfriend was reportedly briefly detained and released.
Wheeler, a redshirt junior, returned from a knee injury for the 2015 season. He’s a three-year starter on USC’s offensive line. USC coach Clay Helton said Wheeler had missed Saturday’s practice because of a personal issue according to the Los Angeles Times.
Wheeler did not play against Utah on Oct. 24 because of a concussion suffered when he was hit in the head by a medicine ball at practice, per the Times. His knee injury in 2014 also came against the Utes.
