AHL outdoor game in Sacramento postponed by rain
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Stockton Heat’s outdoor game against the Bakersfield Condors at Raley Field has been postponed to Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
A steady rain started around 5:30 p.m. local time and never let up Friday evening in California’s capital city. This created water pools on the makeshift rink in the middle of the baseball stadium.
“For the safety of our players and officials and the comfort of our fans, it was decided to postpone tonight’s game until tomorrow afternoon. We have been monitoring the radar and have been in regular communication with both teams and the event organizers throughout the evening, and a 4:30 start on Saturday will be in everyone’s best interests,” said Jason Chaimovitch, the AHL’s vice president for communciations.
Conditions were sunny in Sacramento when the teams arrived to practice Thursday. This lasted through most of the day Friday.
Fans packed the stadium hoping for the game to begin and waited through two announced delays. The announcement for postponement came at 7:48 p.m. local time. The start time was supposed to be at 7:30 p.m.
“I was looking forward to it,” said Chris Wagner, a lawyer who bought a ticket for the game. “With Sacramento and the drought we’ve been having, I thought we’d be all good in the middle of December.”
