Ray Emery signs PTO with AHL’s Marlies
The Toronto Maple Leafs’ goaltending depth chart took a blow Thursday night when Garret Sparks suffered a lower-body injury. With James Reimer already hurt, the organization needed some help.
Enter Ray Emery.
Two weeks after the 33-year old Emery was released from a PTO with the AHL’s Ontario Reign, he signed a tryout deal with the Toronto Marlies.
Jonathan Bernier and Antoine Bibeau, who’s starting Friday for the Marlies, will dress for the Leafs’ game Saturday night against the Los Angeles Kings. Emery should join Rob Madore as the netminders for the AHL side’s next game in Hershey on Saturday.
Sparks and Reimer are both out until after Christmas, says Maple Leafs head coach Mike Babcock.
Emery was close to heading back to the KHL, according to TSN’s Darren Dreger, but immigration issues opened the door for the AHL tryout deal. He played last season for the Philadelphia Flyers before falling to catch on with the Tampa Bay Lightning while on a PTO during training camp.
