Benny Cunningham’s 102-yard return was NOT longest non-TD ever!
Stange statistical quirk in Thursday night’s game between the St. Louis Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
After the Bucs scored on a 98-yard drive to cut the Rams’ lead to 28-13, the ensuing kickoff was brought back 102 yards … and Benny Cunningham didn’t score.

Neither, for that matter, did Todd Gurley, who could not get into the end zone on three tries after Cunningham was tackles at the Tampa Bay 3-yard line.
Believe it or not, two kick returns have gone for longer in NFL history and didn’t score (courtesy of our friend Thomas Gower) — Percy Harvin in 2011 and Ameer Abdullah this season, both from 104 yards. Both Abdullah and Cunningham fielded the ball five yards deep in the end zone, ran the majority of the field and both were tackled just shy of the end zone.
That has got to hurt.
