Yankees security threatened to jail Blue Jays players on scooters
In an alternate universe, Toronto Blue Jays third baseman isn’t celebrating an MVP award this offseason, he’s trying to get out of jail. As insane as it sounds, the Blue Jays nearly found themselves in a cell during a trip to play the New York Yankees. The cause of all this trouble: David Price and his scooter squad.
Shortly after Price arrived in Toronto, he decided to buy a bunch of EcoReco Electric Scooters for his teammates, according to WEEI. If the hotel the club was staying at was close enough to the visiting park, a flock of about eight Blue Jays could be seen riding to and from games on these devices.
The “Scooter Gang,” as Josh Donaldson calls it, almost didn’t have a chance to exist. The team first received their scooters while visiting Yankee Stadium, and they ran into some trouble with team security, Donaldson told WEEI.
“They all showed up when we were playing the Yankees in New York. Then the Yankees security tried to tell us they were going to take us to jail if we rode them at the stadium. We were like, ‘We don’t need to go jail so let’s put them away.’ I’m not going to jail.”
The “Scooter Gang” may have suffered a setback on that day, but they would eventually prevail. After a September game against the Boston Red Sox, the eight Blue Jays players with scooters could be seen riding them in the park and back to the team hotel.
Speaking of Boston, now that Price is there, one has to wonder whether the tradition will continue. He lost his old squad back in Toronto, but he can start fresh with the Red Sox.
In fact, if Price refuses to carry on this custom with his new club, we here at The Stew might have to start a GoFundMe for the Red Sox. You can’t put a price on the image of David Ortiz riding a scooter down the mean streets of Boston, but we’re willing to try.
