OU Sports: SI picks Baker Mayfield over Deshaun Watson for first team All-American – Tulsa World
NORMAN – Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield got the nod over Clemson’s Deshaun Watson when SI.com released its All-American first and second teams Thursday. Mayfield is on the first team and Watson the second, despite the fact that Watson is one of three Heisman Trophy finalists this weekend while Mayfield is not.
The other Sooner who made SI’s honor roll was Eric Striker. He is a first team linebacker along with Alabama’s Reggie Ragland, Missouri’s Kentrell Brothers and Notre Dame’s Jaylon Smith.
OU’s honorable mention picks were running back Samaje Perine, wide receiver Sterling Shepard, center Ty Darlington, defensive end Charles Tapper, cornerback Zack Sanchez and punter Austin Seibert.
For Orange Bowl purposes, the other Clemson players joining Watson on the second team were defensive end Shaq Calhoun, safety Jayron Kearse and kicker Greg Huegel. Honorable mention Tigers were linebacker Ben Boulware, cornerback Mackensie Alexander, tight end Jordan Leggett.
