Reports: Maryland hiring Mike London to staff
New Maryland coach D.J. Durkin is surrounding himself with another former head coach. And another former head coach who has familiarity with the ACC.
Not long after It was reported Durkin was hiring former Syracuse coach Scott Shafer to be his defensive coordinator, Sports Illustrated and the Washington Post reported that former Virginia coach Mike London would be hired as an associate head coach. London would also coach the defensive line, per SI.
London resigned from Virginia following the 2015 season. He was the Cavaliers’ coach for six seasons and compiled a record of 27-46. Virginia was 4-8 in 2015 after going 5-7 in 2014.

Shafer was fired from Syracuse when the Orange were 3-8 and in the midst of an eight-game losing streak.
Before he coached Virginia, London was the head coach at Richmond for two seasons. For two seasons prior to accepting the job at Richmond, London was the defensive coordinator and defensive line coach for the Cavaliers.
Durkin was hired to replace Randy Edsall, who was fired in the middle of the season at Maryland. Durkin served as Michigan’s defensive coordinator in 2015.
