Report: TCU co-OC Sonny Cumbie turns down Texas
Texas won’t be hiring TCU’s Sonny Cumbie for it’s offensive coordinator position.
According to Horned Frog Blitz, Cumbie, a former Texas Tech quarterback, removed his name from consideration for the job. The Longhorns are looking to switch up offenses after a second-straight 5-7 season to start Charlie Strong’s tenure in Austin.
“I want to thank Charlie Strong and everyone at the University of Texas for the opportunity to be the Offensive Coordinator there,” Cumbie said. “It is a position that I have seriously considered and given much thought to. There are many factors that go into making decisions like this and after weighing them all, TCU is where my family and I want to stay.”
Cumbie splits offensive coordinator duites at TCU with Doug Meacham, who calls the plays. Meachem was considered a candidate for the head coaching position at North Texas, but the school hired former North Carolina assistant Seth Littrell.

Orangebloods.com reported Texas was interviewing Tulsa co-offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert for the job.
With Cumbie staying at TCU, the Horned Frogs’ offense should resemble the one on the field in 2015, at least schematically. And that’s important given the turnover on the TCU offense. In addition to seven other seniors, TCU is losing QB Trevone Boykin and WR Josh Doctson, but transfer Kenny Hill may inherit Boykin’s job.
Hill, a former quarterback at Texas A&M who took the college football world by storm briefly at the beginning of the 2014 season, is sitting out 2015 because of transfer rumors. He’d compete with Bram Kohlhausen and Foster Sawyer for the quarterback job. A consistent offensive staff should make the transition to almost an entirely new offense as seamless as possible. And it’s a huge coup for coach Gary Patterson, who has helped turn TCU into one of the best Power Five programs in the state of Texas.
