Dez Bryant would like to advise Roger Goodell about what constitutes a catch
Considering his experience in the NFC divisional-round loss to the Green Bay Packers last season, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant is uniquely suited to speak about what should and shouldn’t constitute a catch, so he would make for a quality consultant with the league’s competition committee.
When asked about the ongoing debate over what exactly makes a catch in the NFL, commissioner Roger Goodell told reporters on a conference call from the league’s December meetings that he’s looking into it.
So my real question was about the catch rule. That’s again a big source of conversation this season. Are you interested in the Competition Committee going back and looking at the catch rule and seeing if they can clarify it, simplify it?
RG: The answer to that is yes. The Competition Committee has looked at that. But I’ll go one step further with you. A couple of weeks ago I asked several football personnel, including former GMs, current GMs, current individuals, former players, former officials to come together and try to see if we can study this and come up with some proposal for the Competition Committee to consider. There are a lot of factors to consider. How it’s officiated, how it’s played, how it’s coached, how the fans react. We want clarity to that. We want to find a better solution if it’s out there and so that committee will come back, they will report to the Competition Committee and the Competition Committee will then of course report to the membership if there’s a solution or a recommendation.
If we learned anything from deflate-gate, it’s that when Roger Goodell is looking into something, he gets to the bottom of it. That debate has been settled, with the exception of a court battle with an MVP candidate that is expected to extend into next season. On to more important things, like a catch — something seemingly so simple that the NFL fails to explain on a consistent basis. A trend is developing.

Dez Bryant to the rescue! When told of Goodell’s comments, the All-Pro wide receiver told USA TODAY Sports, “That’s cool! They need to invite me. Tell them they need to call me, so I can have my input.”
You’ll remember Bryant’s grab at the 1-yard line on a fourth-and-2 inside of five minutes in the playoff game against the Packers — a catch by any playground definition — was reversed because he didn’t maintain possession all the way through the play, despite taking two steps and diving for the end zone.
Debate raged over the reversal of the call, but NFL vice president of officiating Dean Blandino paid a visit to the Cowboys during training camp to clarify the league’s stance on the call: Essentially, they were right.
This past July, Cowboys executive VP Stephen Jones actually agreed with the NFL’s reasoning, telling The Dallas Morning News, “Now, going forward is there a better way for some of these players like Dez Bryant, Calvin Johnson — is there a way to tweak a rule, you can say they should be catches under NFL rules. That’s for the competition committee and for us to continue to look for ways to get better.”
Whether Bryant will be included in that discussion remains to be seen, but I’d sure like to see Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo throwing passes and Bryant making all sorts of ridiculous grabs for a bunch of pencil-pushers to sit down and talk about. While we’re at it, can we get Odell Beckham Jr. involved, too?
