Reports: Maryland hires former Syracuse coach Scott Shafer as DC
It didn’t take long for Scott Shafer to find a new job.
Less than two weeks after his final game as Syracuse head coach, Shafer has reportedly agreed to join D.J. Durkin’s staff at Maryland. According to Sports Illustrated and the Washington Post, Shafer will serve as the Terrapins’ defensive coordinator.
Shafer was fired on Nov. 23, two days after Syracuse lost its eighth straight game. He stayed on to coach the Orange’s season finale – a win over Boston College – to finish with a 14-23 overall record in three seasons as head coach.
At Maryland, Shafer will reunite with Durkin, who was hired last week after serving this season as defensive coordinator at Michigan under Jim Harbaugh. Shafer and Durkin coached together under Harbaugh at Stanford where Shafer was the defensive coordinator and Durkin served as defensive ends and special teams coach.
Shafer was the defensive coordinator at Syracuse from 2009-2012 before being promoted to head coach when Doug Marrone left for the Buffalo Bills. He previously had stints as a defensive coordinator at Michigan, Stanford, Western Michigan and Northern Illinois.
Durkin was hired last week to replace Randy Edsall, who was fired in October after a 2-4 start. The Terps finished the season with a 3-9 record.
