Christian McCaffrey breaks Barry Sanders’ all-purpose yardage record
Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey is the all-time leader in single-season all-purpose yards.
McCaffrey tied Barry Sanders’ 27-year-old record of 3,250 yards on a punt return and then broke it on a short run toward the goal line during Saturday’s Pac-12 title game against USC.
McCaffrey came into the game with 3,035 all-purpose yards and immediately went to work. He dominated the USC defense in the first quarter and by the time he notched the record, he had 271 all-purpose yards.
Sanders, who set the record in 11 games as compared to this being McCaffrey’s 13th game, won the Heisman in the year he set the record. McCaffrey is a Heisman contender, but had a lot of ground to make up on perceived frontrunner Alabama running back Derrick Henry.
However, McCaffrey’s performance so far against USC is turning heads as he is doing everything against the USC defense, including throwing a touchdown pass, which he did to quarterback Kevin Hogan in the second quarter.
