Barry Trotz not thrilled with replay decision in Jets’ win over Capitals (Video)
The crowd at the MTS Centre though the Winnipeg Jets had defeated the Washington Capitals 2-1. Forward Mark Scheifele had just scored what appeared to be the overtime winner, except Washington Capitals coach Barry Trotz challenged the play as being off-side.
And after a very lengthy review the replay was deemed inconclusive, which meant the goal was counted as good. The video of the score, and review, is above.
Here is the NHL’s explanation of the play:
Review was not conclusive in determining whether Winnipeg was off-side prior to the goal. According to Rule 78.7, “If a review is not conclusive and/or there is any doubt whatsoever as to whether the call on the ice was correct, the On-Ice Official(s) will be instructed to confirm their original call.”
Said Trotz after the game via the Washington Post, “They’ll give you an ‘inconclusive’ statement I’m sure and protect their guys. It is what it is. It’s flawed a little bit. They don’t want to call that in a hostile building.”
Trotz also seemed to have trouble with how the play was reviewed off his challenge, with the referee staring at a tablet screen to determine the course of action on the play.
“You can’t have a play like that on a 6-inch tablet. You better put it on a big screen and look at it and then have the people who are making those decisions make that decision. To me that was a good example of that.”
