UNC starting safety Sam Smiley suffers torn Achilles tendon
North Carolina starting safety Sam Smiley will miss the ACC title game and the Tar Heels’ bowl game after suffering a torn Achilles tendon against N.C. State last weekend.
He’s already had surgery.
UNC confirms starting safety Sam Smiley tore his achilles tendon and will miss remainder of the season.

Smiley, a senior, suffered the injury during the third quarter. He was helped off the field and ultimately carted to the locker room.
Smiley has 35 tackles this season, an interception and a fumble recovery.
Smiley missed the 2013 season with a foot injury and likely will be eligible for a medical redshirt season.
North Carolina will play Clemson in this weekend’ ACC title game.
