Clips' Paul out vs. Pacers; Redick sprains ankle
LOS ANGELES — Chris Paul was a late scratch from the Los Angeles Clippers‘ starting lineup against the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday night and is expected to miss more than one game, according to coach Doc Rivers.
Paul, who exited the Clippers’ game on Monday night against the Portland Trail Blazers in the third quarter with a strained rib muscle, was examined Wednesday, but no timetable was established for his return.
“Chris is out, and I’m assuming for the next couple of games, for sure,” Rivers said before the game.
Paul, an eight-time All-Star who has led the NBA in assists four times, is averaging 17.0 points and 8.3 assists this season. He missed three games last month with a sore right groin.
Clippers shooting guard J.J. Redick also suffered a sprained right ankle on the first possession of Wednesday night’s game and was questionable to return.
Redick took a handoff from Blake Griffin, elevated for a jump shot near the top of the key, drew a foul, then landed awkwardly as he crumpled to the court.
After being helped up by teammates, Redick managed to make both free throws. The Clippers subsequently committed an intentional foul in order to substitute Jamal Crawford into the game for Redick, who limped off the floor and proceeded immediately to the Clippers’ locker room.
In 15 games this season, Redick is averaging 14.2 points on a true shooting percentage of 61.2 percent and converting a career-best 45.7 percent of his 3-point attempts.
