The Illinois Fighting Illini dropped to 3-4 (0-0 Big 10) on the season after being defeated by the 4th ranked Iowa State Cyclones, 84-73, this past Saturday. Illinois played Iowa State tough and was down just 40-39 at halftime however, allowed the Cyclones to go on a 18-4 run in the 2nd half in which the Fighting Illini couldn’t back from. Illinois shot 46.0% from the field and 38.5% (10-26) from three-point range in the loss. The Fighting Illini allowed the Cyclones to shoot 49.3% from the field and was outrebounded by Iowa State by a 40-30 margin. Leading the way for Illinois was Malcolm Hill who had 20 points and 5 rebounds. On the season, the Fighting Illini have been led by Kendrick Nunn (18.5 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 2.5 apg), Malcolm Hill (16.7 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 4.3 apg), and Mike Thorne Jr. (13.4 ppg, 8.4 rpg). Defensively, Illinois is allowing 75.6 ppg on 45.8% shooting. The Fighting Illini have a rebound margin of 0.4 and a turnover margin of 0.4.
The Fighting Irish are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 vs. the Big Ten and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games. The Fighting Illini are 5-0-1 ATS in their last 6 Wednesday days and 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games following a double-digit loss as home.
Notre Dame lost their two leaders in Pat Connaughton and Jerian Grant and although they still have a lot of talent in their starting five, the Fighting Irish has struggled a bit early in the season with losses to Monmouth and Alabama. Illinois suffered a huge blow before the season when they lost Tracy Adams due to injury for the season, however, they’ve been very competitive to start the season and have gotten some great production from Freshman Mike Thorne Jr. Illinois might have 4 losses on the season but two of those losses came in close battles with Providence and Iowa State, and as the Fighting Illini will be home in this contest, I think they’ll pull off the win in this one behind strong performances from Kendrick Nunn and Malcolm Hill. Take Illinois to win this one outright.
