Derek Stepan out 4-6 weeks with broken ribs from Matt Beleskey hit
New York Rangers forward Derek Stepan will miss the next 4-6 weeks with broken ribs.
The Rangers announced the news Monday on their Twitter feed. Stepan was hurt on a hit by Matt Beleskey in the Bruins’ Friday 4-3 win over New York. A video of the hit is above. Beleskey did not received any supplemental discipline for the play.
The Rangers thought it was a late hit, while Beleseky said Stepan didn’t brace himself. Initially the Rangers said Stepan was out indefinitely.

The game itself was rather contentious with Boston coach Claude Julien and New York bench boss Alain Vigneault engaging in a war of words following the contest. Julien intimated New York goaltender Henrik Lundqvist was “acting” on the ice, and then Vigneault shot back asking, “Who would you rather have as a son, Henrik (Lundqvist) or Brad Marchand?”
Stepan has 12 points in 23 games for the Rangers this season – six goals and six assists – while averaging 16:47 of ice-time per-game. Last season, Stepan ranked third on the team with 55 points in 68 games.
