Sharks' Marleau scores 1,000th career point
Patrick Marleau has been one of the most underappreciated player of his generation, consistently putting up big offensive numbers in one of the worst scoring eras in league history.
On Saturday night in Pittsburgh — the city where he was drafted by the Sharks No. 2 overall in 1997 at the old Civic Arena — he recorded his 1,000th career point when he assisted on a Brent Burns goal to give the Sharks an early 1-0 lead.
Here is a look at the play that started with Marleau winning a race for a loose puck along the boards and quickly moving it to Joel Ward. From there, Ward fired a shot that was saved by Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury but kicked the rebound to a wide open Burns.

Marleau is just the 83rd player in NHL history to reach that milestone and he’s done with the same team throughout his career.
It’s all part of a fantastic career that Marleau has put together for himself. Along with Saturday’s milestone he has a pretty good shot at hitting 500 goals at some point in the future, a mark he is just 38 away from reaching. As it stands right now he is one of just 52 players in league history to have at least 460 goals and 1,000 points. Thirty eight of those players are already in the Hall of Fame and several more (Jaromr Jagr, Jarome Iginla, Jeremy Roenick and Teemu Selanne) would seem to be locks to get in.
That’s one heck of a career, especially when you add in his 60 career playoff goals which places him 28th all-time and first among players since he joined the NHL in 1997.
