Patriots’ Julian Edelman suffers serious foot injury; status unknown
Another week, another win, another serious offensive injury for the New England Patriots.
The Patriots moved to 9-0 with a thrilling win over the New York Giants, but it was a Pyrrhic victory. Wide receiver Julian Edelman left the game with a serious foot injury, and Fox’s Mike Garofollo is reporting that it could be a season-ender.
That would be a massive blow to the unbeaten AFC favorites.
Last week, the team lost running back Dion Lewis, whose role proved difficult to displace in the win over the New York Giants. But losing Edelman would be even tougher. He’s the first-down machine that has helped the Patriots score points in 35 consecutive quarters, which is an NFL record, and counting.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, however, suggested it might not end Edelman’s season.
Danny Amendola stepped up big in the Patriots’ 27-26 win over the Giants, catching 10 passes (including three huge ones on the game-winning drive) for 79 yards. Rob Gronkowski caught a 76-yard touchdown in Week 10, getting back on track after a cool spell. And Aaron Dobson and Brandon LaFell have contributed but will be asked to step up in Edelman’s absence.
Can the Patriots overcome such a loss. Sure — there are few teams that are better at solving problems and overcoming injuries in league history. But having lost Lewis already, Edelman’s absence will be felt even more.
