Marko Dano either robbed by Jake Allen or jobbed out of goal (Video)
The St. Louis Blues’ net was wide open for Chicago Blackhawks winger Marko Dano on Saturday night.
Tanner Kero (Blackhawks rookie, not a character in THE FORCE AWAKENS) slipped Dano a pass across the Blues’ crease. It looked like the hockey equivalent of an alley-oop. But goalie Jake Allen lunged to his left, his glove on the ice. Had Dano lifted the puck, it’s a goal. But he kept it on the ice, and it flew right into Allen’s glove.
Then glove then carried back over the goal line, the puck in its webbing.
Was it the save of the season, or a goal?
Referee Kelly Sutherland signaled that it wasn’t a goal on the ice. He then went over to the penalty boxes to hear the ruling of the NHL War Room, which “confirmed that Marko Dano’s shot did not cross the St. Louis goal line. No goal Chicago.”
Was it in? Perhaps. But the overhead video was a bit inconclusive. A few more cameras around the net, or some sensors in the puck, and Marko Dano might skate away with a goal there. Instead, it’s Jake Allen with an absolutely spectacular save.
By the way, that was in fact referee Tim Peel standing next to Sutherland, officiating his 1,000th game in the NHL. And, appropriately, proving once again that even when bizarre, controversial calls around the goal don’t involve him, they just seem to follow him.
Happy one grand, old chap.
