Werner: College football picks – Waco Tribune-Herald
For most of their long running series, Baylor wasn’t even competitive with powerful Oklahoma.
But after the Sooners won 20 straight games, everything changed when Robert Griffin III hit Terrance Williams with a last-second touchdown pass for a 45-38 win in 2011.
Since that game, the Bears have won three of the last four including blowouts the last two years.
A hot Oklahoma team hopes to change that trend by handing the unbeaten Bears their first loss at McLane Stadium.
#12 Oklahoma (+2.5) at #4 Baylor
Following a surprising loss to Texas, Oklahoma has won its last four games by an average score of 58-12.
Oklahoma has found its running game with Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon to support quarterback Baker Mayfield’s passing game. It’s been a lethal combination along with a tremendous defense.
Baylor will try to stay unbeaten with freshman quarterback Jarrett Stidham at the helm. With their home crowd behind them, the Bears should remain unscathed for at least one more week.
Prediction: Baylor 38, Oklahoma 35
Texas (+8.5) at West Virginia
While many of the Big 12 schedules have been back loaded, West Virginia’s has been front loaded.
The Mountaineers have already faced — and lost — to the top teams in the Big 12 including Baylor, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and TCU. They finally broke through with a conference win last week against Texas Tech.
Now 4-4 for the season, they’ve got Texas, Kansas, Iowa State and Kansas State ahead. That’s a recipe to be bowl bound.
Prediction: West Virginia 42, Texas 35
#5 Oklahoma State (-14) at Iowa State
There’s some thought that Oklahoma State might be due for a letdown against Iowa State after last week’s big win over TCU and Baylor coming up next week.
Not a chance for an unbeaten Cowboys squad that’s 9-0 and has its eyes on the College Football Playoff.
The Cyclones are certainly much better at home than on the road, but they won’t beat a highly motivated Oklahoma State team.
Prediction: Oklahoma State 42, Iowa State 21
Kansas State (+5.5) at Texas Tech
The Wildcats are in major free fall with five straight Big 12 losses following three nonconference wins.
Texas Tech is also struggling with three straight losses heading into its final two games of the regular season against Kansas State and Texas.
With a 5-5 record, the Red Raiders will become bowl eligible with a win in Lubbock.
Prediction: Texas Tech 42, Kansas State 28
#3 Alabama (-8) at #20 Mississippi State
The Crimson Tide couldn’t have looked more impressive in its 30-16 win over LSU last week.
Though Clemson is No. 1, Alabama might be the best team in the country right now.
Derrick Henry appears to be the Heisman frontrunner following his 210-yard performance against LSU, and he should enjoy considerable success against Mississippi State’s defense.
Prediction: Alabama 35, Mississippi State 21
Last week: 4-1 overall, 4-1 against the line
Overall: 36-9 overall, 23-20-2 against the line
