Report: Red Sox acquire lethal closer Craig Kimbrel from Padres
Fire up the hot stove, we have a major trade to wrap up the work week.
According to Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, the Boston Red Sox have reached an agreement to acquire star closer Craig Kimbrel from the San Diego Padres.
The trade marks the first major move for new president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, who Rosenthal adds became a fan of Kimbrel after seeing him frequently in spring training. Kimbrel also has a history with Frank Wren, who now serves as Boston’s senior vice president of baseball operations. Wren was Kimbrel’s general manager during his time with the Atlanta Braves.
In other words, not a lot of scouting needed to be done here to determine how or where Kimbrel’s talents would fit in Boston. He was a wanted man and the Red Sox got their man Friday, adding him to a bullpen that already includes former All-Star Koji Uehera.
There’s no word yet on the full return for Kimbrel, but we’ll have more information as it becomes available.
