NHL Three Stars: Crosby helps Pens top Habs; Purcell’s OT goal beats Ducks
No. 1 Star: Sidney Crosby, Pittsburgh Penguins
The Penguins captain set up the game’s opening goal and Patric Hornqvist’s tying goal with 6:25 left in the third period. After overtime, Crosby ended the game in the shootout, giving Pittsburgh a 4-3 win over the Montreal Canadiens:
No. 2 Star: Leon Draisaitl, Edmonton Oilers
The young German scored a goal and assisted on two others as the Oilers beat the Anaheim Ducks 4-3 in overtime. He now has nine points in six games. The teams traded goals all night until 1:16 into the extra period when a lovely transition led to Teddy Purcell snatching the extra point for Edmonton:
No. 3 Star: Corey Perry, Anaheim Ducks
The Anaheim forward scored twice, including goal No. 300 of his career, in a losing effort. Perry now has three goals in his last three games and tied Paul Kariya for second all-time on the Ducks’ goal scoring list.
Honorable Mention: Marc-Andre Fleury made 32 saves and won for the fifth time in six starts. He briefly left the game in the first period after taking a Ben Lovejoy stick to the face, which left a bit of a mark and some blood:
Pascal Dupuis needed all of 13 seconds to score in his return to the lineup after missing two games as a precautionary measure … Montreal’s power play went 1-for-4 and scored for the eighth time in seven games … Tomas Plekanec’s assist tied him with Jean-Claude Tremblay for 25th on the Canadiens’ career list … They had a pretty cool ceremonial puck drop before the Oilers/Ducks game at Honda Center … Oilers netminder Anders Nilsson made 34 saves for his second win in three starts. He also got an assist on Purcell’s winner.
Did You Know? Before Wednesday night’s win, the Penguins had lost their previous 37 games when trailing after two periods.
Dishonorable Mention: Two games going to overtime? Gold stars for all.
