Kellenberger: Week 11 college football picks – Jackson Clarion Ledger
Dear fine readers,
When I first began making college football picks this season, I warned you that these would be for entertainment purposes only. I specifically warned you to not go ahead and bet actual money based off what I wrote.
If you did, I cannot be held legally responsible (Gannett’s lawyers cannot stress this enough). Now am I morally responsible? I must admit I feel some guilt. If you’ve gone under, please feel free to reach out. We may not have enough room to provide shelter for you and your entire family, but at the very least we’ll make sure Fido is well taken care of. In fact, if he is anything like Lyla, the Kellenberger family dog, he’ll soon demand that hipster dog food with ingredients we can actually pronounce and a spot on the bed at night. That’s fine, because this is on me.
It’s been bad. Real bad. I thought I had a turnaround coming, too — I was only six games below .500 against the spread — but then … last weekend.
Ole Miss covering a 11-point spread? Ole Miss couldn’t cover anyone all night.
LSU not only winning at Alabama, but by a touchdown? What can I say — The power of Leonard Fournette seduced me.
Georgia routing Kentucky? Should have seen that coming. Clemson messing around with Florida State? Also totally believable.
Were it not for Mississippi State’s rout of Missouri, I’d have been staring at an 0-5 week. As it is I went 1-4, and I’m now 22-31 against the spread. Awful.
I don’t know if I can turn it around. It may be too late for that. But can I try? Yep. It’s time to get desperate.
Last week: 3-2 straight-up, 1-4 against the spread.
This season: 41-16 straight-up, 22-31 against the spread.
The Big Game
No. 2 Alabama (-8) at No. 17 Mississippi State, 2:30 p.m. Saturday (CBS): Dak Prescott and Dan Mullen have never beaten Alabama. For Dak, it’s his last chance. For Dan it’s his best chance for at least a year or two. But there’s a reason why this team lost to LSU and Texas A&M, and I can’t quite ignore that. My pick: Alabama 28, Mississippi State 17.
In the State
Southern Miss (-7.5) at Rice, 2:30 p.m. Saturday (ASN): The Golden Eagles can play for a C-USA West title against Louisiana Tech on Nov. 28, but that probably takes winning both games before that. Can USM get it done? Yes it can. My pick: Southern Miss 35, Rice 21.
Around the Nation
Georgia at Auburn (-1.5), 11 a.m. Saturday (CBS): Auburn beat Texas A&M last week and actually looked kinda decent. Georgia beat Kentucky by 24 and I guess looked OK. What happens here? Heck if I know, but Mark Richt is a nice guy. Let’s root for him. My pick: Georgia 21, Auburn 17.
North Texas at Tennessee (-41), 11 a.m. Saturday (SEC Network): Hey, there’s no rule against me picking awful nonconference games. My pick: Tennessee 49, North Texas 7.
BYU (-6.5) at Missouri, 6:30 p.m. Saturday (SEC Network): I’m going with the guys who can score touchdowns and haven’t spent the week involved in campus protests. My pick: BYU 21, Missouri 10.
