Report: Possible overdose suspected in Tommy Hanson’s death
Former Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tommy Hanson may have died due to an overdose. The details surrounding the 29-year-old’s death are still unclear, but an overdose is possible according to Zach Klein of WSB-TV.
Hanson’s official cause of death has yet to be determined but, as Klein states, that will be released once a toxicology report is completed.
As of right now, sheriff’s officials are saying there was “no indication or suspicion of foul play,” according to the Associated Press.
Hanson was visiting a friend at the time authorities were called. According to police reports, a 40-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman were also in the house at the time. They are cooperating with the investigation. Once Hanson arrived at the emergency room, the possibility of an overdose was mentioned.
Hanson spent four of his five major-league seasons with the Braves. He rose through the team’s farm system, and finished third in the Rookie of the Year voting after posting a 2.89 ERA over 21 starts in 2009.
Hanson struggled with shoulder woes in 2011, and saw his numbers drop following those injuries. Hanson last pitched in the majors for the Angels in 2013. He posted a 5.42 ERA over 73 innings. During that season, Hanson had a tough time dealing with the death of his younger brother.
While Hanson hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2013, he’s attempted to comeback while pitching in the minors. He spent the 2014 season with the Chicago White Sox Triple-A club, and spent 2015 in the San Francisco Giants organization.
