NHL Three Stars: Ducks (finally) pick up second win, Canadiens victorious … again
No. 1 Star: Frederik Andersen, Anaheim Ducks
The Ducks have TWO wins! (Who knew a month into a season that would be a thing.) In Anaheim’s 4-2 victory over Nashville, Andersen picked up his first win of the season with 40 saves. This is the Ducks first win in six games.
No. 2 Star: Brent Burns, San Jose Sharks
The bearded one scored 2 goals, one of which was a shorty, on 8 shots. Patrick Marleau provided the primary assist on Burns’s second goal, a laser he kicked from his skates to his stick and past Varlamov. Patrick Roy would challenge on the grounds of goaltender interference, but it would stand as a good goal.
No. 3 Star: Tomas Fleischmann, Montreal Canadiens
Talk about a bargain for the Habs. Fleischmann signed off of a PTO with Montreal for $750,000 AAV. He’s put up 10 points through 12 games. Against the Jets, he scored a goal and had 2 assists. David Deharnais also picked up 3 points in the 5-1 drubbing of the Winnipeg Jets.

Honorable Mention: Canadiens goaltender Michael Condon improved to 4-0-0 in his stint as Carey Price’s backup … Chris Stewart scored his first goal as a Duck and picked up 2 assists. He and Rickard Rakell were plus-3 for Anaheim. Rakell started the scoring for the Ducks at 1:11 of the first period on some shifty puck handling:
… Joe Pavelski’s empty net goal with 1:20 to go appeared to ice it for the Sharks; however, Cody McLeod scored 15 seconds later to put the Avs within one. The magic ran out there for Colorado and San Jose wins 4-3. Picking up a goal made Joel Ward the Sharks top point man producer with 11 … Sam Reinhart played the least amount of time for the Buffalo Sabres, but he scored the game winning goal against the New York Islanders:
… Jordan Staal scored with 1 second left against Tampa Bay to end the game 4-3 in favor of the Lightning. Andrei Vasilevskiy earned his first win after undergoing off-season surgery on a pinched vein. Steven Stamkos snapped a 5 game goal-less drought with a blast on the power play:
Did You Know? Jarome Iginla scored his 180th power play goal on Sunday. That moves him past Mark Messier into sole possession of No. 25 all-time.
Dishonorable Mention: Mattias Ekholm was a minus-3 for the Preds. Corey Perry and Ryan Kesler remain goal-less on the season. Ryan Getzlaf (DNP) is appendix-les. Jiri Sekac played only 6:40 before sustaining a lower-body injury … Semyon Varlamov’s record fell to 2-5-1 on the season. Matt Duchene, Nathan MacKinnon and Jarome Iginla were all minus-3 for the Avs … Carolina credited with 15 giveaways in loss … John Tavares was a late scratch for the Islanders due to illness … Michael Hutchinson earned his first loss of the season after giving up 4 goals on 9 shots. He was pulled for Ondrej Pavalec. The NHL is reviewing this elbow thrown by Dustin Byfuglien on Brendan Gallagher:
